Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Sign on Tree

Conserve our natural resources with the Three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

All about sustainability

Sustainability is about meeting our energy needs today, without making it difficult for future generations to meet their energy needs in the years to come.

This means we need to think about the effect our actions have on the environment, the people around us, and the future of our planet and its inhabitants. It's all about balance!

The good news is if we all take small steps to live more sustainably and reduce our energy consumption – such as by switching off lights or shutting down appliances – together we can make a huge difference.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Putting these three 'R's into practice can help to cut down on the amount of rubbish we have to get rid of. And less rubbish means we need less space for landfills and can conserve more energy.

So the three 'R's keep our planet happy and healthy!

Here's what they mean:

  1. Reduce: Try and reduce the amount of waste you create.
  2. Reuse: Wherever possible, reuse items – like refilling your water bottle instead of buying a new one.
  3. Recycle: Remember to recycle materials such as glass, newspaper, and cardboard.

How Green is Your Transport?

No, we're not talking about lime-coloured cars – green transport means getting around in a way that's more sustainable and better for the environment.

Here are some of the ways that you can travel cleaner and greener:

  • Catch public transport: Swapping your car journey for a train or bus ride is a more sustainable way to travel. Could your regular car journeys be done on public transport instead?
  • Start a carpool or 'walking bus': Arranging a carpool to share rides to school is a smart way to travel more sustainably. Or, if you live close by, start a 'walking bus' and pick up 'passengers' along the route!
  • Walk or cycle: Not only is walking or riding your bike better for the environment – it's also great for your health!

Transport Thoughts: Flying vs. Driving

Travel more sustainably: catch a bus instead of driving.

While you might think that a single plane is more environmentally-friendly than lots of cars, aeroplanes generate a high amount of carbon emissions and need to be powered by lots of fuel from non-renewable energy sources.

Flying may not be fun, but it's not all that green!
